Strengthening Community Safety with the AGENT Program
Posted onThe Town of Edson is proud to launch the AGENT Program (Authorized General Enforcement for Nuisances and Trespassing), a collaborative initiative aimed at enhancing public safety and supporting our local business community.
Starting November 20, 2024, the AGENT Program will empower Peace Officers—including RCMP and Community Peace Officers—to act on behalf of participating businesses to address loitering, encampments, and other disruptions on private property efficiently and legally.
Why the AGENT Program?
Edson has experienced a rise in incidents of encampments and loitering, particularly on private properties, which can create challenges for businesses and their customers. Local business owners have shared concerns about these activities affecting their operations and the perception of safety in the area.
The AGENT Program builds on existing Alberta laws, such as the Petty Trespass Act and the Trespass to Premises Act, to give businesses a stronger voice in maintaining their property. By authorizing Peace Officers to act as their agents, participating businesses can ensure timely interventions to address concerns and foster a safer community.
How It Works
- Businesses register for the program and receive an AGENT sticker to display at their entrance.
- Peace Officers are authorized to act on behalf of participating businesses to address disruptive or unsafe behaviours.
- The program operates within Alberta’s legal frameworks to ensure fair and lawful action.
Program Launch
The AGENT Program will officially launch at the RCMP Town Hall on November 20, 2024. Local business owners are invited to attend and register to participate.
This initiative aligns with the Town of Edson’s commitment to:
- Creating a connected, safe, and inclusive community.
- Supporting a robust and adaptable local economy.
