New Virtual Emergency Physician Program Now in Edson!
Posted onAlberta Health Services (AHS) has expanded its Virtual Emergency Physician program to the Edson Healthcare Centre! This pilot project helps improve support for emergency department (ED) patients in rural communities like ours.
How It Works:
When there’s no on-site ED physician available, an experienced rural/northern ED physician can support local clinical staff remotely via phone or video. This virtual physician can:
- Collaborate with on-site staff
- Speak with patients directly
- Order tests and medications
- Assist with transfers or discharges
This service ensures timely and safe care for patients with non-life-threatening concerns. For life-threatening issues, EMS will transfer patients to the appropriate facility with in-person ED physician support.
“Programs like this help ensure rural Albertans receive the care they need when they need it,” says MLA Martin Long.
This innovative model, proven in other provinces, ensures that low-acuity patients are supported while AHS continues recruiting in-person ED physicians for our community.
If there’s a service disruption at Edson Healthcare Centre, AHS will communicate whether a virtual physician will be available.
