Flooding Issues & Steps Taken

Posted on

The Town of Edson has been working to mitigate flooding issues throughout the community. We recognize the frustration flood events cause and have been working diligently to come up with solutions.

What we’ve done

  • Sanitary Sewer Condition Assessment – this report identifies problem areas and recommendations to upgrade and repair our main line infrastructure.
  • In the 2023 budget, Council funded a Sanitary Backflow Preventor Program. So far, only 6 have been installed.
  • $2.6 million was approved for a project to replace a failing sanitary main on 18th Avenue between 48th Street and 50th NOTE: The funding includes water system, storm system, and surface replacements as well.
  • Complete design work in 2023 for two sanitary system upgrades that will be presented for budget approval and construction in 2024. This includes increasing the main size on 10th Ave between 52nd Street and 54th Street and twinning the main at 54th Street from 6th Ave to 1st

What we’re doing next

  • Plumbing inspections from a third-party plumbing professional are being organized for ALL properties that have registered with flood damage from this recent rain event. This will help best determine ways to fix the issues and identify any incorrect practices.
  • This flood event data, the condition assessment data, and residential plumbing inspection data will be used to come up with short, medium, and long terms solutions to minimize and/or remove the risk of flooding during rain events.
  • Town Officials are advocating for funding support from the Province.
